11.10.2017Getting Your Corvette Ready for HPDE

Funfest in the Midwest, Funfest, HPDE, Track, Corvette If you have registered for High Performance Driver Education during Funfest in the Midwest, you will want to take a few steps to prepare your Corvette. Taking these steps before you arrive at the track will ensure your Corvette is safe and ready to hit the track.

Follow along as we cover Wheels and Tires, Steering and Suspension, Engine, Safety Equipment, and other common sense safety checks that anyone can preform as well as miscellaneous tips and items you should consider bringing to the track with you.

Preparation Before Arriving At The Track

Wheels and Tires - Inspect each wheel, making sure that each is round and without any dents or damage to the mounting surface. Many Corvettes tires are frequently aligned to a negative camber, which can hide heavy wear and exposed threading on the inner tire, while the threading on the outside of your tire looks brand new. If you are not able to get your Corvette on a lift, simply turn the steering wheel all the way to the right (while parked) and check the threads on your front passenger tire. Then turn the steering wheel all the way to the left to check the front left tire. Flat tires with plugs are not a safe option for the track as they often fail under the high-stress track conditions. Center Caps/Hubcaps often come off and should be removed to prevent a dangerous situation on the track.

Steering and Suspension - Have you noticed any difficulty in turning your steering wheel; does the wheel feel tight or loose? Have you noticed a vibration in your steering wheel? Does the wheel slip when you attempt to turn it or hold it in a turn position? These could be signs that your Corvette is experiencing steering problems and may not be safe on the track. To test the Suspension, we recommend the "Bounce Test". With your Corvette in Park, press down on the front of the car with all of your weight and "bounce" it a few times, then release. Repeat at the rear of the vehicle. If your Corvette continues to rock or bounce more that 2-3 times after you release it, the suspension is wearing out.

Engine Compartment - Go ahead, pop that hood open and lose all track of time staring at this fantastic beast! When you've snapped out of it, be sure you did not drool on the engine compartment as we check for any possible leaks. Leaking components in your engine compartment will fall onto the track, creating unsafe conditions for you as well as other drivers. Check that your battery is properly secured with two bolts and there are no leaks, check that not antifreeze is leaking from your radiator and that no oil, transmission, brake, gasoline, windshield wiper fluid or any other kinds of liquids are leaking inside of your engine compartment.

Brakes - Stopping power is crutial for a safe driving experience anytime, but this is especially true on a race track. Whistling noises, chirping sounds and grinding are all indications that you may be experiencing one of these common brake problems: worn brake pads, heat-cracked or worn rotors, loose-fitting brake pads in the caliper, missing or damaged noise insulators, uneven torque of lug nuts or caliper hardware. Check that your Brake Pads are at least 1/8 of an inch thick. Check your Rotors for deep, visible grooves. Make sure you have clean brake fluid and that the system is free of air.

Safety Equipment - Check that your seatbelts are in proper working condition. Roll Bars are required for Convertible Corvettes. Drivers must wear long pants with closed-toe shoes and a sleeved shirt. Helmets are required, as is eye protection (face shield, goggles, safety glasses).

Preparation At The Track

- Take a few minutes to remove unnecessary items from your Corvette: spare tire and jack, floor mats, items in your glove box or center console, any other loose items.

- Prepare your Corvette for "Racer Numbers" by applying a small amount of wax to your quarter panel, allowing it to dry. After you put your racer numbers on, you can wipe away the remaining wax. At the end of the weekend you will be able to remove your numbers without damaging your paint or leaving a sticky residue behind.

- Clean your front and rear windows to reduce glare and increase visibility.

- When coming off the track, use a block of wood to keep your car from rolling. Do not use the parking brake: this will trap the heat and could cause your rotors to warp.

- Keep your engine running for a couple of minutes with the hood up, this will allow your engine to cool down and help circulate hot fluids.

Items to bring with you: glass cleaner, wax, a quart of oil, rags, tire gauge, basic tools, a change of clothes, sunblock, a cooler packed with ice and drinks, and a folding chair.
